Constellations for mixed ensemble -
Flute, Violin, Vibraphone, and Piano

Constellations is program music exploring how human relationships reflect the life cycles of stars. Just as stars are born, shine brightly, and eventually fade away, relationships--whether romantic, familial, or friendships--go through similar phases of intensity, transformation, and sometimes, quiet departure. Made for mixed chamber ensemble, extended techniques for flute, violin, and vibraphone players are used, creating ethereal, space-like sounds.

Some techniques include key clicks and tongue rams for flute, bowed vibraphone, and gliss, col legno tratto, sul ponticello, and sul tasto for violin.

Constellations symbolize the impermanence of significant human connections and the beauty in their ever-changing nature, drawing a parallel to the cycles of the cosmos. Whether fleeting or lasting, each relationship, like a star, leaves an imprint on our lives, shaping who we are and how we see the world.

Great for amateur, college, and professional ensembles. Advanced-professional players

Instrumentation: Flute, violin, piano, percussion: vibraphone, windchimes, suspended cymbal
Level: Advanced-Professional
Performance time: ca. 5 minutes
$40

The piece weaves a haunting melody, originally composed for piano, throughout the ensemble. Written for flute, violin, horn in f, and piano, each instrument continuously contributes to the overall mysterious atmosphere with similar and complementary rhythms and motifs taken from the main theme. The work features the abilities of the French horn, with the player having a prominent melody line in the contrasting section. There are also cadenza and solo-like passages for the flute and pianist. This work is great for high school, collegiate, amateur, professional ensembles, and  very advanced young chamber players looking for something contemporary and fresh. Rhythms are simple, while expression and musicality can be explored. This piece is in 6/8, in the key of F minor, with total performance time around 4.5-5 minutes.

Excerpt from program notes: I've always had an interest in psychology, symbolism, and archetypes when watching movies or reading stories. I initially sought to write something similar to the Zodiac Suite by American jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams, which is a collection of 12 pieces expressing the personality traits of people she admired. While Williams used the quote "stars guide man's life and fortunes” for musical expression, I discovered the artwork of Pamela Colman Smith who was a British artist, writer, and mystic.

Using Smith's tarot art as a basis, my aim was for the music to represent the traditional qualities associated with the card, although there are many interpretations of what the image could mean. Personally, characteristics of water and feminine energy first came to mind, followed by strength, adaptability, seriousness, intuition, loving understanding, knowledge, introspection, and self-trust.

World premier of The High Priestess for Chamber Ensemble performed on June 13, 2023 at the Walden Creative Musicians Retreat with members of the International Contemporary Ensemble.

Works for Piano

Nick & Charlie

Nick & Charlie (2022) is a charming piano solo inspired by Alice Oseman's graphic novel and Netflix series Heartstopper, where music brings both characters together! Using the letters from the main characters' names, Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson, two distinct melody lines were created as a "musical cryptogram" (hidden words matched to musical pitches). Both themes are simple, and I wanted this piece to capture the youthful optimism portrayed in the first two volumes of the graphic novel (and season 1 of the Netflix adaptation). Overall this solo has a light-hearted pop feel and a driving rhythm that can appeal to tweens, teens, and adults alike. Total performance time 4:35. Level: Intermediate $7

Musical concepts & techniques featured: Key of e minor, left hand syncopation, simple rhythms of mostly quarter, eighth, and half notes (crochet, quaver, and minums for our UK Friends!), triplets, alternating legato and staccato passages, sensitivity to musical interpretation, dynamic contrast, tempo changes, pedaling. Musical phrases are 4-8 measures long, which makes recognizing patterns and form easy for students. With performance directions of "hopeful," "happily," and "relaxed," interpretation beyond just notes and rhythms is an advanced concept teachers can explore with students.
